The History of Flickr

There is an interesting article in USAToday about how Flickr came about. It shows how Flickr went from being a game programmers side project to being the top photo sharing site on the web and a multi-million dollar Yahoo! purchase.

USATODAY.com – Flickr of idea on a gaming project led to photo website

“It turned out the fun was in the photo sharing,” she says. Fake scrapped the game. She and her programmer husband, Stewart Butterfield, transformed the project into Flickr. In less than two years, the photo-sharing site — now owned by Internet giant Yahoo — has turned into one of the Web’s fastest-growing properties.

I love Flickr, I can’t imagine using anything else for my photographs. And that is despite me having used home grown, off the shelf and open source products. The best bit for me is the combination of great software and user interface and a great community.

Nothing else comes close.
