Andrew Prezioso: The Night Before Irene

Looking to break into the photojournalism profession, I’m always looking for some standout image. Though I’m more comfortable shooting sports, when we had Hurricane Irene hit Richmond this past fall, I was ready to go shoot the storm. This image is actually from the day before the storm, right at dusk. I have never seen a sky quite like that, and it just gives a sense of the foreboding storm.

This is actually not the photo I wanted to get. When I was walking back to get my camera after dinner/buying bottled water for the next day, I noticed the sky was golden. I wanted to get that photo; but by the time I was able to gather my equipment, it was too late to get the golden sky. By the time I got out there with my equipment, the sky had turned that pink/red/purple color. Regardless of the change in scenery, I knew the framing of the picture would be important. Obviously, taking just a picture of the sky is a boring photo. There was just something about the clock that I thought provided a terrific contrast between it and the sky.

I fired a couple of frames of the scene, and was immediately pleased with the scene I was able to capture. Originally, the shot looking at the clock straight-on was my favorite, with its more vibrant colors. But recently, I liked the other one slightly better; the bird flying adds a nice touch to the photo. Also, behind the trees in the bottom left corner of the photo, you can see what look like storm clouds in the distance, rolling in. It also helps that the bird is flying away from the clouds, like it is trying to escape the storm.

Even though it was a fairly simple photo set-up, it is still one of my favorite non-sports shots.

Photographing Pugilists, Brilliant Martial Arts Photography

If you are a fan of photography and martial arts then I have discovered the blog for you.

Susumu Nagao is a Japanese sports and Mixed Martial Arts photographer with a massive collection of beautiful and diverse photographs of just about every major MMA organization.

While I like bloodthirsty imagery as much as the next man and was once a martial artist (a mediocre one), after a good ten minutes looking through the stream I started yearning for a picture of kittens or a sunset! Brilliantly executed photographs though, you have to hand it to him he definitely captures the moment.

What is in Dan Chung’s Camera Bag?

Dan Chung from the Guardian is giving us a look inside his camera bag and gives us an insight into gear being used for shooting the world cup. Geeky stuff but I for one love looking at what equipment people use, especially the top guys like Dan

Anyone not interested in gadgets can stop reading now, but for those of you who asked, this is the kit I use to cover a World Cup match. Like the vast majority of photographers at the tournament I’m using Canon digital cameras. You only have to look at the number of big white lenses at the pitch side to realise how dominant the brand is in professional sports photography. I use up to five Canon Eos digital camera bodies at the average match, my main cameras are two Eos1D mk2 cameras on my 500mm f4L and 200mm f1.8L long lenses. I also have my Eos1Ds mk2 attached to a fixed 35mm f1.4L wide angle and a 580ex flashgun which I keep by me in case the players celebrate right in front of me. I then place an Eos20D with a 14mm f2.8 and a borrowed Eos1D mk2n with a 16-35mm on remote controls placed at either side behind the goal on Manfrotto mini tripods. I also have a 135mm f2L and 70-200 f2.8L lenses with me in case I can’t get to sit where I want to use my preferred lenses.

Getty Images World Cup Photography

I am not interested at all in the world cup but I am interested in photography. Photographers from Getty Images have been blogging about sports photography and apart from the sports aspect I have found it really interesting reading.

There are descriptions of what it is like photographing such a big event plus some great tips for anyone interested in this field (pardon the pun)

take one goal scorer (in this case Henrik Larsson of Sweden), one goalkeeper, (Paul Robinson of England) and then mix together with the two missing ingredients. One is obviously the ball. The other, which is often over-looked, but for me makes the picture complete, is the goal post. The goal post helps us place the other ingredients in the right context. You can see that it’s a goal and not just another missed chance.

39 Megapixels all put to good use

Luminous-landscape has gotten all hot under the collar over the picture below, but not for the reason you might think …

A sure sign that Spring is just around the corner (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere at least) is that the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition hit the newsstands yesterday. What may draw this to the attention of photographers (besides blatant prurient interest, or a fascination with the latest swimsuit fashions) is that photographer William Hawkes used the new 39 Megapixel Phase One P45 back to take this shot for a Budweiser beer ad. The reproduction size in the magazine is one of the largest ever; a fold-out measuring 11”x34” (27.94cm x 86.36cm). This ensures that almost every teenage boy in America will paste this large poster to their bedroom wall. The fact that it’s an ad for beer will likely never enter their consciousness, and that it was shot with a P45 back, not at all. But those of us interested in the latest photographic technology will take note. When you purchase your copy of SI this week, be sure that you let the pharmacist knows that you’re purchasing it purely to look at resolution figures

How long will it be before we have 40 megapixels in our own DSLRs? Not long I expect, the march of technology continues …
