Eclipse
FlickrBlog points to pictures of the eclipse posted to Flickr. It’s nice to mark these kinds of events but I never seem to catch them prepared. The last proper eclipse we had in the UK I almost burned my retinas like the rest of the population but I was at work without a camera or any of the requisite eye/lense protection required. Lots of people did the homebrew versions recommended in newspapers. Ah well, maybe next time!

Win This
This SanDisk Ultra II 1.0gb Compact Flash memory card could be yours if you win the Picture a day challenge vote.
First though we need to start nominating!
To nominate add a comment to this post. At this stage you do not need to register (you will to vote) but I will not approve any nominations that do not include your name and email address to make it fair (otherwise people would find it easier to post every pic in their set, heh).
Please post thumbnails and/or links of three nominations with a short description of why you are nominating them. They can be yours or someone elses but they MUST be taking part in either 30dayphoto or DSLRBlog-PAD tagging and have made a good effort to take and upload a picture a day.
Nearer the end of the month you will have another opportunity to nominate so get looking and nominating now! Get your friends to nominate you!
The History of Flickr
There is an interesting article in USAToday about how Flickr came about. It shows how Flickr went from being a game programmers side project to being the top photo sharing site on the web and a multi-million dollar Yahoo! purchase.
USATODAY.com – Flickr of idea on a gaming project led to photo website
“It turned out the fun was in the photo sharing,” she says. Fake scrapped the game. She and her programmer husband, Stewart Butterfield, transformed the project into Flickr. In less than two years, the photo-sharing site — now owned by Internet giant Yahoo — has turned into one of the Web’s fastest-growing properties.
I love Flickr, I can’t imagine using anything else for my photographs. And that is despite me having used home grown, off the shelf and open source products. The best bit for me is the combination of great software and user interface and a great community.
Nothing else comes close.

Photography, the Law and Privacy, Again
Yet again the law governing photography in the USA has been tested, this time landing in favour of the photographer. This was particularly interesting as it was not just a privacy issue but one of religious rights also.
A New York court ruled this week that a photographer who took pictures of subjects on the street without their knowledge and then made hundreds of thousands of dollars selling those images did not have to get the permission of his subjects because the intention of the work was art, not commerce. The ruling reaffirms that people in public spaces cannot assume any privacy privilege, even if, as in this case, the subject was an orthodox jew, who regard portraits as graven images and disgraces the man in his community.

As a photographer I enjoy taking pictures of people, scenes seem more alive with people in them, but I do not see it as a “right”. I wasn’t aware of this particular religious belief but I feel like I would prefer to be sensitive to it rather than inflame the issue by selling the photograph (marketability of my photography aside!).
Should we be able to take and sell photographs of people just because it is in the name of art? Does this cross over into rulings around photographing children?

Dark Side of Citizen Snapping
Sadly I can believe this is true. If it’s not true I can see the scenario happening before long.
Scoopt: Entirely anecdotal evidence of the dark side of citizen snapping
