Sony Announce α (alpha) A100 DSLR and 18-70mm Lens

News just in from Sony, their much anticipated first DSLR offspring from their Sony-Konica-Minolta mashup, the Sony Alpha A100 DSLR plus 18-70mm lens kit. Judging from the pictures it looks pretty nice, pretty much standard DSLR fare. Only practical hands on experience would tell if it is usable and comfortable.

DSLRA100KDSLRA100KDSLRA100K
10mp puts it in competition, in purely sensor terms, with Nikon D200, D2X, Canon 5D, etc, although it is very strange the ISO starts at a wopping 160 – where is the ISO 50 and 100? It goes up to 1600 maximum. Not a huge problem but not a competitor to pro-level cameras that currently have greater range and also steps in between. Remains to be seen what the noise is like, presumably it is so good at 200 they do not see the need to go any further but as a ISO 100 user on a camera with great noise control I think they have missed a trick. The sensor is a 1.5x crop, like Nikon.

The kit lens is a pretty standard walk-around zoom, pretty bog standard. I don’t expect anyone to be jumping for joy but neither will too many people be disappointed, it would have been nice for them to come out with a real knock-out lens to get people talking.

Nikon announce D2Xs 12.4 megapixel pro DSLR

D2XsNikon have announced their new replacement for the D2X DSLR aimed at top end users.

Nikon D2Xs

D2Xs shares many performance and design innovations with the D2X. It also offers Nikon’s acclaimed DX-format CMOS image sensor capturing 12.4 million effective pixels per image, producing 4,288 x 2,848-pixel images with the high resolution and sharp detail needed for demanding professional assignments. The D2Xs, however, also introduces a range of revised features that make operation significantly more responsive – including refined viewfinder performance that makes for easier composition when shooting in Nikon’s exclusive High-Speed Crop mode, a new 2.5 inch LCD with a 170-degree wide viewing angle calibrated at the factory to ensure consistent color fidelity, significantly increased battery life and a wide range of firmware enhancements.

Most of the buzz seems to be around the features that I find quite ho-hum. It’s hard to get excited about 12mp and 2.5 LCD screens, not much news there. No, the specs that have me intrigued are

  • 6mp crop mode allowing 8 frames a second burst
  • GPS capability (with optional adapter)
  • Wireless transmission and control through WiFi

Go check out the D2Xs announcement at the Nikon site, and the preview by Nikonians/LetsGoDigital. I am sure there will be a boatload of reviews in coming weeks.

Sony Serious About DSLR

Sony have been talking about their plans for their newly named Alpha range of Digital SLR Cameras. These plans include releasing 20 new lenses this year and have underlined they are committed to this market for the long term. While they have some heritage with their Konica Minolta partnership they have a heck of a lot of ground to make up outside of the consumer market.

“Our goal is to become the shin’uchi, or headline performer, of digital SLR cameras. In the traditional Japanese art of rakugo storytelling, the shin’uchi is the performer recognized by everyone as the undisputed master of his craft.”

New Tips Blog

We like our photography tips here at DSLRBlog, we are here to learn and even the most experienced photographer can all learn something new. I was pleased to read in my inbox this morning that Darren the guy behind Digital Photography Blog has started a new blog just for photography tips…

Digital Photography School

Over the two years of that site I had a lot of emails from readers asking for tips on how to use their cameras and came to the conclusion that while there are many millions of digital cameras being bought each year around the world that a very large proportion of those that buy them could be using them to achieve better results.

While I think many of his tips will be beginner level so might not apply to the majority of our DSLR owning readers (people tend to learn the ropes with point and shoot before lashing out the cash on a more complex camera) I would still encourage you to take a look as you never know what nuggets of inspiration might be waiting.

To give you one example, his post on  Getting Horizons Horizontal was something I was pulled up on early by Mark and looking over my contacts photos today should be required reading for many Flickr users!

Canon 30D Takes Top Ranking

DSLR Photography says the new 30D from Canon became the top selling DSLR in Japan last month, replacing the Nikon D200.

Unfortunately they don’t say where they get their figures from and it is only Japan they are tracking, but still it is good news for Canon. I am surprised really, the 30D seemed a bit ho-hum based purely on reports while the Nikon D200 by all accounts kicks ass. I wonder if these positions will switch once the initial launch purchases steady off…

No Full-Frame DSLR From Nikon

Looks like Nikon are still not interested in full-frame sensor DSLRs. In fact it seems they are quite happy to let Canon take the market as they think their cameras suffice. Check out this interview from DSLRPhotography.

In the first place, the current situation is that the picture quality of the DX camera can already sufficiently produce a satisfying photograph. So, what’s the meaning of such a big sensor? Of course, there is also a price problem. We cannot put out an outrageously priced camera simply because we want to have better function on the camera.”

Question: But, isn’t it true that the Canon 5D product is actually quite successful?

Answer: “Certainly, there is a product like 5D out there. However, a camera is not only about the sensor, the product has to be considered with a combination of various elements. We have cost balance the various components of the camera, based on our judgement, there is no necessity to sell a camera with full frame sensor.

DSLR Photography – Nikon about their full frame camera plan

Is this a mistake? From a marketing point of view I think they will be seen as less “pro” while ever they do not have anything to match Canons 5D and pro line-up. If they also concentrate on adding to the entry-level and see price as a big barrier (which from the interview they seem to) they will also further push their “prosumer” image.

Interesting point about their sensors being developed through a partnership with Sony. With Sony DSLR cameras very much in development how long can this last? I imagine there are already moves to distance that relationship or at least diversify partners.

Having said that it might be the feedback they get is Nikon fans are not pushing for full-frame. Who knows?
