Color film was non-existent in 1909 Russia, yet in that year a photographer named Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii embarked on a photographic survey of his homeland and captured hundreds of photos in full, vivid color.

Just goes to show what a distorted view we get of the era through the grainy, faded black and white and sepia prints we have to go by. What a genius this guy must have been!

I must admit when I first read about it I thought it was some sort of joke or trick. Pretty cool!
