I am a bit late to be picking up on this as I don’t really follow Pentax news. This is only the USA price (obviously) but their big price reduction could make it the cheapest DSLR on the market.
Perhaps other brands will follow suit … in fact Canon is rumoured to be releasing a budget model …
As of this morning, Pentax is announcing a $200 price reduction on the 6.1MP *ist DL kit, bringing the formerly $799 kit featuring their 18-55mm DA lens down to $599, and making it the first DSLR kit to sell for less than $600.

Lower entry prices have got to be good for the DSLR market, bringing more consumers will enlarge the market bringing in economies of scale and competition and hopefully make all the kit more affordable for all of us.

I nearly boughtly an ISTD (hehe I said STD), purely as I used an MZ50 as my first SLR. I think there has to come a point where the price will bottom out.
I think price is the only thing keeping lots of people away from DSLRS. I have a good 3 or 4 friends who would have one if it was not for the price.
Yup, and I think they wouldnt be put off by a few missing features either. The thing that worries me is a low back price might lead people to think they are getting into the field cheap, only to find out there are a helluva lot of things to spend the change on ;O)
