My new “Bigma” 50-500 lens

Well I’ve had it for a while now, and have had a little time to play, I can give it a bit of a review.

The lens is a sigma 50-500 lens so thats quite a bit of zoom, after you take into account the magnification of a digital camera that works out at about 800mm, so thats about 16 times what you can see with the naked eye.

There are only a few niggles with it.

  • Its a little slow to gain focus and it take more than one twist to get full zoom, so following action is a little hardGone!.
  • Its quite large, on minimum zoom (50mm) – its about 21cm long.
  • It’s very heavy at just under 2 kilos.

However I still like it, with the Canon battery back the balance of the camera just feels so rightnew kit.

So far the image qualilty seems good, but its been a bit gray and hazy to give it a proper chance.

I was a little dispointed in the zoom at first, this was due to fact its not so impressive zooming in on close things.

However after getting outside it felt much more usefull, zooming in to get shots that would otherwise be impossible.

For example this Nesting Balck Swan

Would have been difficult getting this shot as the nest was on an island in the middle of a lake.

I still feel I want more zoom, but I need to get used to this, its very hard to keep steady with such a length but a tripod isn’t always possible. I think it should help me get a steady hand for my smaller lenses.

It was a little expensive so unless you got some good vistas I’d hold off. But i like it so much.

Don’t all men want a bigger lens?
I don’t think i’d be satisfied with the lens’ that they have on theose military satalites.

I reality you see more with the zoom but still see things you’d like to see closer.
The more you see the more you want to see.
