For my latest update in the Getting Started With Serious Digital Photography ‘book’ I want to cover “essential accessories”. While I could try and put the ultimate list together I am bound to miss out a lot of good stuff, plus I thought it would be fun to open it up to you guys.

Here is where I am up to so far in no particular order

  • Tripod
  • Filters
  • Bag
  • Remote
  • Flash
  • Dust blower
  • Lens cleaner
  • Card reader
  • Memory cards
  • Lens cap cord
  • Battery grip
  • Spare battery
  • External HD
  • Replacement manual

What are your “can’t live without, everyone must have one” accessories?
From the obvious to the obscure, let me know your favourites! Not just
categories, if you like tell us specific brand/make/model/supplier.
Also what would your priority be, if you only had limited funds and
were just starting out, what would the first things you would purchase
be?

I love (and miss) my monopod. I had a Bogen 681B with the 3229 tilt head. Strong, durable, and unforunately left in a remote section of Eastern Oregon on a trip. I’m in the process of ordering a new one. I did a bunch of research and didn’t find anything else that sounded better than the 681.

A small little LED Flashlight (the ones you can hang on your Keyclip) has helped me when I made some Nightshots. Not only I could operate my camera (still dont know all buttons by heart yet) but it also helps me using the Autofocus on Objects not too far away by lighting them up for the camera (the AF Helpflash is somewaht disturbing).

Good stuff, didn’t think of either of those even though I should remember Damian has both! Keep em coming

Rather than a manual, I would suggest a PhotoBert sheet for your camera.

I quite like the Magic Lantern Guide book for the 350D, it comes with a similar thing
