Canon M80 / M30 – Canon Enters Portable Video and Media Storage Market

Interesting news from Photokina is Canon announced the M80 and M30 media storage devices. With 80gb and 30gb capacity respectively they should prove popular if the price is right. I keep delaying looking too hard at these kinds of machines because of the price but this coming from Canon does look tempting.

Canon today launches the portable devices, designed with EOS and other digital photographers in mind. The Canon Media Storage M30 and Canon Media Storage M80 devices feature a large ultra-bright 3.7” TFT screen with 160º viewing angle for image and video review, and a 30Gb/80Gb hard disk to store digital images, movie and sound files of various file formats. Both units feature a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface and slots for CF and SD cards.The Media Storage M30 and M80 feature:

  • 30/80 Gb hard disk
  • 3.7” ultra-bright TFT screen with 160º viewing angle
    CF and SD card reader
  • USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection
  • Support for multiple image, video and sound file formats, including Canon RAW, MPEG, MP3 and WAV.
  • Extended PictBridge functionality
  • 4 – 8 digit image file password protection
  • 1/8” audio-out headphone jack

Canon Adds New DSLR Camera Photo and Raw Software Tutorial

Rob Galbraith has pointed out that Canon has added a couple of new New Digital Photo Professional tutorials. If you are an EOS owner and haven’t tried out the bundled software yet, get on over and download an update and try it out, you might be surprised at how good it is.

Nikon battery recall

Well, I received another email today from Nikon. Unfortunately this time the spin wasn’t so positive. It seems that they are recalling a batch Nikon Li-on batteries (and guess whos camera falls into this bracket!). It’s a back to base return I am informed, however from what I can ascertain from several websites if you provide a credit card number they will ship you the battery in advance (just make sure you return the faulty unit!)

Wireless USB

Here’s an intriguing idea. Wireless Connectivity of USB Devices

While it is based on a fancy higher speed bluetooth-like technology (“Ultra-Wideband Technology” dontchaknow!) rather than Wi-fi it does represent some interesting ideas about the way things could go. Just not needing all the cables and whatnot would be good.

Belkin announces its new CableFree USB Hub, the industry’s first
USB Hub that does not require a cable to connect to the computer. This
Hub allows people to place their laptop anywhere in the room while
still maintaining wireless access to their USB devices, such as
printers, scanners, hard drives, and MP3 players. This is the first
UWB-enabled product to be introduced in the U.S. market.

Additionally you can specify an RSS photo feed from Flickr based on your own tagged keywords. You can even shoot photos on your mobile phone then e-mail them directly to your eStarling frame for display.

This is cool but how can you justify $250 quid … hmmmm … I could try! It not only has wifi but also takes compact flash cards. You need never get bored of the photographs on your desk again. Not only that but they can be bang up to date….
