Cameralabs have reviewed Damians walkabout lens, Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3, one of the lenses I have recommended most. In fact other than the “plastic fantastic” 50mm f/1.8 it is probably my most recommended lens.
Delivering a focal range equivalent to 27-300mm, the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC is a highly versatile lens. Its massive 11.1x zoom range allows you to capture both wide landscape shots and decent close-ups of distant subjects such as wildlife without worrying about carrying additional lenses.
They compare it against the Nikkor and the Tamron where it fares well. The Nikon being twice the price and coming with image stabilisation obviously beats it but the Tamron was more closely matched and their conclusion is for you to try them both out to see which you prefer in use.
While you should never expect prime level of optical performance from a zoom that covers this range the Sigma 18-200mm stopped down is very sharp. It’s a great general purpose lens at a bargain price and on Canon at least, there isn’t even a first party option.
Here are some shots I took in Calgary Zoo with this lens

My Sigma 18-200 is my walk-about lens too. I don’t find it any heavier than any other lens but I do wish they could have knocked off some weight from the 20D!
The 18-200 and the 10-20 are my favourite lenses right now. I’m very happy with Sigma stuff too!
