Don’t Forget to Snap
I uploaded some of the best photographs I ever took yesterday to flickr. Where are they, well they’re private. Don’t worry they aren’t risqué, they are snaps of my family and friends that I took before I took up photography as a serious hobby.
It’s easy to get caught up in technique and framing in this hobby of ours and all too often quality control sneaks into our photographs and relevant times in our lives are misplaced. Snaps are all about a time and a place, a lot of them aren’t in focus or have the clever composition, you certainly wouldn’t get the adulation and praise from your flickr contacts with these types of images.
I revisited lots of my images a couple of days a go and thought why I haven’t backed these up, these are the real important images to me. If the house burnt down I could live without the images of buildings are trees, but I would be very upset if I lost that out of focus image of my daughter holding her brother on the day he was born.
I suppose what I’m trying to say (to myself especially) is that many of us seem to have lost the ability to snap. People (kids especially) don’t respond to well to being positioned in the correct light or having to wait five minutes whilst we shoot using different apertures and shutter speeds. I’m even contemplating buying a completely automatic point and shoot camera specifically for holidays and days outs. It’s good to snap!

MarkT’s 30 Day Conclusion
30 Day Photo Conclusion
Well my 30 days are over and I have limped over the crossing line after missing my PAD on Saturday due to family commitments.
So what have I learned?
The Negative
Well I have learned that it is much more fun wanting to take photos rather than having to take photos. For me spontaneity has always been one of the attractions of photography, unfortunately I’m not the sort of person who can turn my creative side on at will. I think this has shown in my PAD, some days have been great, other days it just hasn’t happened. Usually I would have the luxury of quality control and would simply not publish something I was 100% happy with but during this period I simply haven’t had this option.

Buildings have rights too…..
On my way around Leeds today I had my first brush with a buildings security. Was I where I shouldn’t be?
Well no I was on the street just outside Leeds train station. I was taking photos of the Princess Exchange for my PAD, I was stood on the pavement when the security guard approached me. “Are these photographs for personal use?” was his question. Well yes of course…… However this does bring up a question, which buildings are copyrighted and which aren’t? Many are (I know for one Sydney Opera House is) which means you cannot capture these images for commercial use without consent.

PAD Problems
Well it’s day 10 of PAD and I have reached my first major problem. This evening I have an Accenture corporate event, no doubt alcohol will play a major part in the evening and therefore I want to keep my camera well and truly looked up in my drawer. The solution to this problem was to download Picasa to my laptop at work and upload my image before drinking myself silly. Of course in the melee that we call getting me to the train station (5 people are involved in this operation, one is only 4 months old) I left my USB cable at home. I now have to run out at dinner time and buy a cheap card reader, I also have to spend some of this time trying to capture an image (and it’s raining!).

Are you local?
I’ve had PAD burn out, so I’ve been on go slow photography wise now for about a month. This ties in with a new job that I have taken from a previous employer. Today I thought I would try and get back in the saddle so to speak and take some shots. One of the benefits of working in Rotherham is the fact that it is literally five minutes from open country side, with this in mind I remembered a disused water treatment plant (well that’s what I think it is) which is located near a local reservoir.
After about half an hour of shooting I decided it was cold and that I should make my way back to the office. As I started walking back two council workers in a landrover stopped me. The conversation went something like this
Council: Can I help you?
Me: No, I’m fine thanks
Council: Do you need any help?
Me: No, I’m sorry am I on private land?
Council: No this is Rotherham council land, are you from around here?
Me: erm, no is there a problem?
Council: We just wanted to know if you needed help, are you from the press.
Me: No I’m just an amateur photographer
Council: Oh, you’re alright then.
So what was all that about? Had I stumbled into Rotherham own Area 51 or something. What had me chuckling all the way back to the office was “are you from round here”. Seems that in Rotherham it pays to be local….
